Golf is played as a team sport at the collegiate level in the United States. Because of this, universities require more than two or three athletes, as stroke/teamplay is crucial for victories. With an average team size of 10 for men and 7 for women, golf can provide substantial opportunities for scholarships. There are more than 2,000 universities that sponsor golf as a sport and both men's and women's golf receive attention and viewership.

The golf season at the collegiate level in the United States is quite long, with preliminary tournaments and invitationals beginning in late August and the championships being held in May. The change in 2009 to focus on the combination of team and independent play made each round more competitive. Most recently, Oklahoma State won the men's tournament and Arizona was crowned champions of the women's game.
