The quality of competition in the collegiate game for soccer has increased dramatically over the recent decades. There are nearly 1,700 universities that sponsor the sport and the structure for competitions is linked closely with the U.S. Soccer Federation. The average athletic scholarship awarded for the men's and women's game is USD $5,569 for levels of the collegiate game. Each team averages around 26 players which provides fantastic opportunities to play at the next level.

Although the season is played in the fall for both men's and women's soccer, training and development occurs year-round. The most successful programs recruit not only U.S.-based talent, but also from all across their world in order to field a competitive squad. Usually, the best players go on and play professionally. The most recent D-I champions (2018) for both men and women is Stanford University.
